What is Common Rail Direct Injection or CRDi ?

The CRDi is a latest method used in the diesel engine where a common high pressure fuel pipe line will supply fuel to all the 4 or 6 chambers. Modern common rail systems are governed by an engine control unit (ECU) which opens each injector electronically rather than mechanically.

History

The common Rail System was developed by a Swiss named Robert Huber and later was enhanced by Dr. Marco Ganse of the same country. Its first successful usage was in a production vehicle in Japan, during the mid-1990's. A Japanese automotive parts manufacturer named Denso Corporation used it in a Hino Rising Ranger truck and sold for general use in 1995. Later, the design was acquired by the German company Bosch for completion of development and refinement for mass-production.

The new technology proved to be highly profitable. The first passenger car that used the common rail system was the 1997 model Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTD,and later on that same year Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI. The technology is suitable for all types of road cars with diesel engines, ranging from city cars (such as the Fiat Panda) to executive saloons (such as the Audi A8). The main suppliers of modern common rail systems are Robert Bosch GmbH, Delphi, Denso, and Siemens.

Automotive refer to their CDi engines with their own brand names

Advantages of CRDi
  • The common rail diesel is an engine that performs better, silent, has less emissions and more fuel efficient than the regular mechanical injection diesel engines
  • A traditional diesel engine has a fuel pump that builds up the pressure of the fuel and that fuel is sent to mechanical injectors with the pressure of the fuel pump being used to open the injectors and the fuel being under pressure would literally spray into the cylinder.
  • As the injectors are controlled electronically a spray pattern for a more powerful explosion can be achieved.
  • There is no unburnt fuel or very little if any and the fuel is injected at exactly the right time for all to be used.
Disadvantages of CRDi
  • The main disadvantage is that this technology increase the cost of the engine.
  • This technology can’t be employed to ordinary engines.
  • High maintenance cost and the spare parts are pretty expensive as well.
